Site Description

Odo Shakiso is one of the Districts in East Guji Zone Ormia. Located at 500km South of Addis Ababa Odo Shakiso is bordered on the south by the Dawa River on the west by Bule Hora, on the North East by Uraga, on the North by Bore& Adola, and on the East by Liben Districts. Odo Shakiso is located between 5o2'29"-5o58'24" northing latitudesand 38o35'0"-39o13'38" easting longitudes.

The elevation is 1758-2300 meters above sea level.T he mean annual rainfall is about 900 mm and the annual temperature of the district is 22.50c. Most of the earth surface of the district has an undulating land surface with an elevation ranging from 1,500-2,000 meter. Kerchanshe Trading PLC ;Haro Welebu site is located in Shakiso.

Coffee Type

Shakiso Welebu coffee is heirloom variety known for its exceptional fruity flavors; small rounded beans with blue berry and also spicy notes of rue, cardamom and vanilla notes with medium to full body and mild pointed to high pointed acidity.

Production

The farmers grow subsistence crops as main stay as well as cash crops like coffee. Coffee has a significant role in local economy. Currently 2700 farmers with coffee farm of about 5000ha are working with Kerchanshe Trading PLC an out-grower farmers.

Processing

We receive cherries from these farmers and process it. The processing is done in 2 ways; wet and dry processing.

For wet processing Red coffee cherries are taken to the pulping machine (which removes the fruity part from the parchment). The next step is fermenting the parchment by soaking in fermentation pond for 36hours. The purpose of this fermentation is to remove the sugary mucilage from the parchment. Following the fermentation process the parchment is get washed by human power.

For dry Processing we collect red cherries and leave place it on raised drying beds to get dried by sun in open space. In some cases when there is continuous rain we use artificial drier. After cherries get dried we take it to huller machine were the coffee husk is get removed.

The company owns 1 wet mill and 1 dry mills at this unit which have the collective capacity of producing over 2,000,000 kg of green beans.
